The Epson Printer! (Report Review)
Sep 05, 2011 by Naj
Consumer rating: (2)
The Epson WorkForce 840 All-in-One ($300 street), which the company announced at CES 2011, packs a lot of features into a relatively compact frame, and sells at a very good price for what it offers. If you're looking for a high-volume multifunction printer (MFP) for a small office, it should be on your short list.

The 840 can print, copy, scan, and fax. It can scan to your PC or to e-mail. It can print from or scan to memory cards or USB keys. It can fax either from the printer's keyboard or from your PC (PC Fax). It can print or copy multiple pages onto a single sheet. This machine comes standard with a honking 500-sheet paper capacity, split between two 250-sheet trays. Not only does the 840 provide an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, its 30-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) also duplexes, letting you automatically scan or copy both sides of a sheet of paper.Despite its impressive feature set, the matte-black 840 retains a relatively small footprint, measuring 12 by 17.5 by 14.5 inches (HWD). Centered within its 7.8-inch tiltable and responsive touch panel is a 3.5-inch LCD screen...Photo quality was slightly sub-par, not a critical flaw for a business printer. Colors were on the pale side, with some loss of contrast in brighter areas. Fine detail such as thin lines did not show well when viewed close up, and some solid areas showed a touch of graininess. Most of the prints could pass as drugstore quality, particularly when viewed at arm's length, and they're more than adequate for typical day-to-day business uses such as printing out images or Web pages..Graphics were average for an inkjet MFP. Issues of note included dithering—the breakup of some solid areas into graininess or fine dot patterns—and banding, a regular pattern of thin lines of discoloration. Neither was severe, and the graphics were good enough for internal business use, including PowerPoint handouts..The one thing that holds me back from unreservedly recommending the Epson WorkForce 840 All-in-One is its slightly sub-par output quality, for photos and especially for text. That said, if you don't need it to print formal reports or fancy-looking correspondence, it's a great buy for the money: a full feature set, a whopping paper capacity, and automatic duplexing (including with the ADF). It's a good choice to anchor a small office with relatively high-volume printing needs...
Pros:  Great paper capacity. Spacious, responsive touch screen. Good range of all-in-one functions. Good value for the price.
Cons:  Slightly sub-par text and photo quality
